Anyone from the NY Metro area can tell you about a unique, but fastly disappearing special place - the Greek owned diner. A place that used to be open 24 hours where you could get a decent breakfast or burger or club sandwich or big salad and any other type of food such as Italian, Greek, Seafood, or steaks and all types of freshly made cakes or other desserts. Since moving to the west coast almost 25 years ago, every trip to the city aka Manhattan each year included a trip to a traditional diner. We always stay in the theater district and we had a favorite traditional greek diner on Seventh Avenue on the corner of 55th Street for over 20 years. Sadly it lost its lease 2 years ago and we were searching for a replacement that would be open after seeing a Broadway show. We tried many places in the area, but something was missing. Either it was not open late enough or did not have the options we wanted. I am also a stickler about wanting a certain type of french fries that were the type I grew up with here. First choice steak fries flat and rectangular or thick traditional fries with no skin. I used to love the freshly made hand cut crinkle fries at the Carnegie Deli before they had a change of owners in their final years when they changed to thin and what seemed to be frozen fries. Nathans has a version of these giant crinkle cut fries, but it is not a diner. I researched on Yelp and it gave me a list of top diners. One came up in Astoria, Queens called the Neptune Diner. I checked out the menu, called for hours and if certain foods were still on the menu. It was literally right next to the elevated N and W subway lines. Another option was one of my old neighborhoods in Chelsea where I used to live. The Chelsea Square Restaurant was one of my favorite diners on 23rd Street and 9th Avenue when I lived around the corner (and always appears in Law and Order). That was an option, but it would take just as long to get there as hopping on the Subway to Queens. My spouse thought I was crazy, but he said if I wanted to try it we would go. We were door to door in 20 minutes with the subway being right next to the Half Price Ticket booth. As the pictures show, the portions were huge and delicious. I opted for my usual Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe (deluxe usually means fries, onion rings on top, lettuce, and tomatoes) and usually comes with pickles and coleslaw. My other half opted for broiled cow liver with bacon, steamed broccoli and a salad which he said was even better than our old place. The half sour pickles were fresh, delicious and crunchy. Our server was Evelyn and she treated us extremely well. Looks like our trip next year will include another visit to Astoria!

I've enjoyed eating delicious meals, including Greek specialties at the Neptune, through my childhood, growing up in Astoria. I'll miss this place as July of 2024 is the last hurrah for the Neptune diner, a fixture of Astoria since 1954. On July 28th, it will close its doors for the last time and be demolished for a new apartment building. #astoriaqueens #greektownusa #neptunedinerastoria

3.5 stars Nice diner with plenty of booths and quick service. Although our waiter seemed a bit rushed. Food was pretty good but the sodas which are fountain drinks were way overpriced at $4. I had turkey sausages and fish and chips. The sausages were delicious and juicy. The fish and chips were better than expected. Great tartar sauce. The portion was large and we couldn't finish it.
